Encompassing the waters of Lake Powell and the surrounding desert, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers an amazing natural landscape as well as a recreational paradise. Hugely popular with boaters, the 254-square-mile lake at the heart of the park has four marinas for boaters to launch from. Every year some two million visitors head out on Lake Powell to relax, play and fish for bass, crappie, walleye and catfish. Kayakers can head into the canyon, far from the main recreation area, and explore the fantastic sandstone cliffs that line the water's path. Offroad drivers can head along either the Burr Trail or the Hole-in-the-Rock Road, both of which wind through the arid desert along historic paths. Mountain bikers must stay on designated roads, but there are many isolated paths to follow, creating a sense of isolation even in this popular recreation area. Hikers have more options to choose from, including many short day hikes and longer, multi-day trails for veteran hikers. Camping is always a great way to make the best of a visit to the park, but the campsites are in high demand and most sites do not accept reservations so come prepared with a backup plan. This massive recreational park holds land in both Utah and Arizona, starting just west of Canyonlands National Park and continuing until just northeast of Grand Canyon National Park.
